Yesterday I noticed that my grass needed to be cut; it was getting pretty tall, and the only thing I worried about was snakes. There is a snake here named the Equis; it has white marks shaped like an X.

In Spanish, the X is pronounced “equis.” So I have nightmares about this ever since our neighbor told us he found one in the house next door. The house next door is in the process of being built; no one lives there!

Growing up in Kentucky, we had so many snakes, and occasionally I would find one in the house. It has haunted me ever since I imagined waking up and a snake curled up in the room waiting to attack; thankfully, it has not happened yet since the snakes are poisonous.

The other night I woke up, and on my wall was a giant spider. The week before, I must have seen his brother in my kitchen. I am not afraid of spiders; my boyfriend just killed it with a shoe, and we went to sleep.

We have a lot of bugs here; we live in the country. The house does not have the best insulation, and you can see gaps and…
