I had a best friend when I was a little girl like most little girls do. Instead, mine had four legs, a long black mane, and a black tail, and he went by the name of PeeWee.

He was the first-ever birthday gift that I remember. Every little girl always asks for a pony, and I got one. I can’t remember how old I was, but in all my childhood memories, PeeWee is always there.

My father bought him at an auction in Kentucky for $80. That was a lot back in the early ’80s, especially when we were to the definition of dirt poor. Except we were never lacking in my eyes.

I only adapted that mindset because my family used to say how they were surprised we lived that way for so long. No one ever understood the way my parents thought.

Except I did, I have always understood. At a very young age, I knew what life meant. I just got lost in the weeds for a few years or decades.

PeeWee was my pony. He was pure black; he was gorgeous. My father broke him so I could ride him a sassy stallion. Yet with me, he was a kind and gentle soul.
