I remember when I was 15 there was an ad in a very popular magazine at the time called Seventeen. It was so cool!

If you had a subscription, you were even cooler. Pretty sure I picked my copy up at a library.

I was not in the “getting a subscription to a teen magazine cool.”

I remember this day very vivid. There was an article on an ad, looking for models. They only wanted a picture of your face and an essay on why you wanted to be a model for seventeen.

If they accepted your photo, they would feature you in seventeen and also receive $500!

That was huge.

Instantly, I started posing in my mirror, brushing my very straight and fine hair. Doing the duck lip before it was cool and trying to figure out how to take a picture without having to ask my siblings!

How embarrassing, right?

I was 15. It horrified me. I was thinking about taking a what we call a “selfie”…
